Roo

No other choice. Desperate times. Desperate measures—if he could figure out what measure to take.

Big if.

Kneeling on the hard salt ground wouldn’t do him any good. Not for much longer. The thumping in his ears was getting worse and worse. Enough that the burning within him was worse than anything that the vaporized salt could do. His dragon scale wouldn’t protect him from this disaster. Only delay the inevitable, since it was protecting him from any stray arrow. But Roo needed to figure out a way to counter whatever was happening and quickly.

Somehow.

The hail of arrows was getting worse and worse. As if the elves recognized Roo was in serious trouble. They must know something was wrong. Just from his pose. Keep the pressure up. It’s what he’d do, if their positions were reversed. Eventually him or his familiars would make another mistake.

A fatal one.

The statues around them would only last so much longer too. So many arrows were shattering around him that it smelled like the occasional lumberyard his mother loved to visit for the stray tales of crazy only fishermen could out tell.

The elves here definitely had enough arrows to destroy enough statues. For all he knew, they had pouches like his. Pouches that could hold far more than what they seemed to be able to. With so many loads of arrows, there was no chance that they’d run out of arrows. The source of those sinister booms would arrive long before those elves would run out of arrows.

Think, Roo, think.

But his mind, it was getting as foggy as the air. And the fog smelled of sweet burning salt. Just thinking seemed to burn as badly as each breath. It was worse than the exotic food down in the tropics. The food was so spicy it was comparable to trying to eat dragon’s breath.

Some of the dishes were even called dragon’s breath. Sometimes. The moderately hot stuff. At least moderate according to the locals.

As insulting as it was to dragons elsewhere.

The echoes of all the arrows shattering, exploding, maybe focus on that. Focus on working out how large this chamber was still. Without the dwarves to maintain it, some places should have started to sink. Shrink the size of the chamber. All from the pressure of the ground above this chamber. Massive pressure. Beyond imagining.

So much pressure. Like that all over his body now. Enough that it was like he was being buried alive. That weird nightmare come true. A nightmare he hadn’t had in many, many years. Over a decade. All because of some campfire story his second father told him. The reason some graves had bells by them.

But only for those who could afford it.

And one of his reasons to become a True TriCross knight originally, as silly as that sounded, but now … no.

Not now.

He needed to try something. Something desperate but something.

Anything.

He reached into his pouch. Pulled out his first familiar, his only familiar in a small imp form, and … no, she wasn’t there?
